Racial Influence on Police Brutality

Some percentages caught my eye about how different the numbers are according to race when comparing a police department to the public they are supposed to protect. A few years ago, LA's population was 40% non-white yet 61% of the LAPD is white. Also, in New York, whites make up less than 50% of the population when the NYPD is 75% white. This brings about a lot of controversy on and off the streets in these major cities when it comes to police brutality.

  1. Do you think white police target minorties more than caucasians?

  2. I, in all honesty, think racism is not truly the heart of the issue. While race can certainly be made a factor in crime rates, I still believe it's more of an economic issue. I see it as the differences in wealth. America is the biggest and wealthiest industrialized country, but it also has the biggest gap between the rich and the poor and America's poor consists largely of minorities. It's not so much the color of the skin, but the balance on their savings account. Or, better put, a class war.
